almost

Few things as I journey into this world of Brooklyn and NYC.
  • Park Slope is really a hub to families and kids. There are alot of them, every 3rd person has a kid with them. I can see being in this atmosphere can be a bit daunting to the untapped family-ite, but to someone who has a 18 month old and is embarking on a new land, it's easy and I love it. There are a million places that you can go to ensure your little one is getting all the stimuli that she/he needs to...well....make life easier.
  • We still do not have our stuff. It has been 15 days since they took it away. The last we knew it was in Pennsylvania. That was yesterday. It is now probably somewhere in NY in a warehouse and maybe we will have it on Monday.
  • Jewels for schools is going to be really fun, can't wait for it to up and runnin. All I need now is our stuff, so I can take the necessary photos to get the website complete. My goal is the end of the month, now if we can only get our things...hmph

It's official!

well almost...I bought the domain address www.jewels-for-schools.com today.
and once I finish the logo, mission statement and information page, it will be up and going!

I also now have 6 necklaces completed, four more to go.

today is the one month anniversary of me not working.

tomorrow I am taking Ella to her first gymnastics class.

the project

one of the new creations
some beadwork in process
this is how old some of my jewelry boxes are...yes, that is Howard Stern
(an upgrade is in order)
This is the foundation to which "Jewels for schools" came about. I have a lot of beads, chain, findings, etc that I have not done anything with in years. Some of them are very very old as it can be identified in the picture with the stickers. I decided that I cannot buy any bead or chain until I have utilized everything in these cases. I can only purchase items needed to complete the piece. I have 3 necklaces completed, but have so many to go. It is going to be so hard not to be tantalized with all the beautiful beads and crystals in the store, but I will persevere and accomplish my goal.
When I have 10 pcs complete, I will open the Etsy shop to have a percentage go to 2 foundations Fund for public schools and San Francisco Education fund. I had to keep my heart in SF and help Ella's future with NY. The % will be 50/50 between both foundations. The ultimate goal is to have a whole network of talented jewelry makers contribute some of their proceeds to "Jewels for Schools" that will go into these funds.
Right now it is piece by piece and one Etsy shop at a time. More to come..

schoolhouse

I was searching for some images to help with the logo for "Jewels for schools" and came across these. I wish I knew what was going on in those kids everyday lives. Maybe it is the same for kids then and now, Billy took my shovel, Anna Marie doesn't like me, Billy found a cool frog. It is really only the parents that are truly aware of different political, social changes that are relevant in the world.

moving on

I couldn't post for a little bit after my last one.

There are so many things going on:
- was laid off, it was a good thing
- moving to New York
- starting a foundation "Jewels for schools"

This morning I talked to 5 different moving companies associated with Vanlines. My quotes ranged from 1080 to 4300. With all of the same requirements, loading and unloading - direct move. I did not know that all companies are associated to the same place, but do now. I have to say that we will probably just go with the person who is a good price and has some personality. I basically hung up on a guy who only wanted to tell me the comparison with his company vs others. It was really annoying and it was as if he was in a contest on who can talk the longest with 20 marbles in his mouth. He won.

Moving to NYC, exciting right?! Well yes and no..It is the right move for our family.
But it is incredibly sad to leave our friends and family.

Starting a foundation, Jewels for Schools, really exciting. Before I reach "foundation"
status I have researched some places that I can fund until we can be our own. More to come on this.

Being laid off, I am treasuring the precious opportunity I have to hang out with my little girl and watch her grow. I am having so much fun making jewelry with the thought that they will go to help a good cause, educating our kids.

Oscarblue

May he rest in peace

I got Oscar in Berkeley, Ca 16 years ago on Telegraph avenue. My friend Joelle worked at a booth on the street selling sea shell pipes and called me when she saw the box of kittens.. I came down right away and picked the lil guy that was hiding behind a blanket. We then drove off in my 64 Dodge dart to my warehouse in East Oakland. I state the car because it had bench seating and after the initial scare of "who are you?!!" from Oscar, he then crawled up in the top of the seat and put his paw on my shoulder as I drove. I was 20 years old.
He was my buddy, my partner in crime and made my world. I moved all over Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco and as long as he had a lap to stretch out on, it was all ok. I will miss him so much and loved him dearly.

Albums to ride to

My husband and I share in taking our daughter to day care every week.
My days are Monday's and Friday's and when I am not taking her, I ride my bike to work.
I love my bike and I love my ride. We live along the waterfront, so my ride consists of me
dazing off at the water with music bringing me along the way.

Here are my Top five morning pics:
I did not write the album, because it really doesn't have to go down to that detail for me in the morning. It is all about the melody and voice (or lack there of).
1.) Joy Division
2.) Belle & Sebastian
3.) Led Zepplin
4.) Feist
5.) Modern Lovers

At the end of the day, it gets a little tricky. There are a lot more factors involved, you never know where the day is going to take you. I am going to leave it open ended right now and will come back to that one later. I also hear my girl calling me..sweet thing.

Joana Vasconcelos

There are people in this world that completely amaze me. Joana is one of them. I found these dogs on a trend watch from WGSN and then went from there into the world of this woman from Portugual. Check out her site and notice that everytime you go in, the background changes. Time to get lost for awhile, have fun!

Alternative Apparel

They pretty much nailed it on the women's hoodie. 3/4 length sleeve, fitted and slightly cropped.
The Gym Rat will be added to my closet very soon.

So will these

Perfect little knit dress to throw on and pick up veggies at the Farmers Market.

My lil girl would love this and so would I.
When Greg Alterman set off to make the "perfect tee", Alternative Apparel was born. His collection of comfy-ness has not stopped there, as you can see you can be head to toe in an Eco friendly heaven.

my husband's pics

I saw these pics on the desktop and thought I needed to share them. I just found them, as I was putting together my last post, so I haven't asked him yet where he found them. He is watching a movie in the living room with our friend Susan. I love finding the pics he saves on the desktop, and every time I do and I take a look, I can immediately see him in them.

it's all about color...

I think the lil pink shoes with the yellow stockings are my fave. They would be quite lovely with brilliant blue as well. I want to eat that donut.

a NEW magazine = yahoooey!!

A lovely talented bunch from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute launched a new magazine in June/2009. Mint magazine is filled with up and coming artists and designers that are due for some press time...from the images I can see, I want to see more.

couture weave

For the autumn/winter 09/10 show, Alexis Mabille hair was woven with ribbons. I think it is fun and flirty. I also think I really just wanted to say fun and flirty.

Music tee by LNA clothing

Along with rockin tees, they make leggings that are super cute too....they should make booty shaking music to go along with the leggings..hmmm, good idea
Music tee by Lna clothing & invisible dj, with the front being the cover art and the back is the playlist. the music is available through a code on the hangtag that you can download off the web. the current playlist is said to have a folk art bluesy vibe....

This is the Mos Def tee...just thought I would share

white trumpet = love

this picture is just dreamy with fun little dresses.
this is a preview of their Fall collection. i love the dress in the middle
this label is by the design duo Reno Inchenko and Julie Rouzioux, you can find out more on www.whitetrumpet.co.uk

missoni mannequins

These are just plain cool. check more out at www.estorickcollection.com

meow

I am loving that they are calling out "cats" as a new trend. We all love the animal tee, particulary the native american inspired, but now we are getting to just the simple care-free domestic cat. Love it.

Be nice to Kate

Can you imagine if all your personal problems were blasted all over the media and then the next thing you knew, there were t-shirts? I know she was a mess, but do you think her daughter needs to see this?

Saddle up

These are quite adorable and I need one for my bike. They would be perfect for a day like to today when it is so foggy, it is nearly raining. I am sure I can find some on Etsy.
I have a Brooks saddle and love it. I am still trying to figure out what the extra loop in the front is for on this one though.

I want....

To be able to do this to my hair. Like you were galloping around on your favorite horse through the English countryside.
II would like to have these boots. The floral tights are too cute as well.

These are houses off a canal in Amsterdam. I love the floor to ceiling windows.

today & flight 666

We are so blessed to have such an avenue for media at our fingertips.
Here is my morning.
Don't feel good, so decide to get my computer from work and work from home and rest.
Wish I didn't have to do the work part, but that is just how it goes.
So I am home and eating some breakfast, reading through Arkitip's site and I come to
the same you tube trailer, I have below. It is for Iron Maiden's Flight 666 movie on their
tour. Now my morning of rest then work, has turned into FIND this video. Thank you Kyle Blue.

Power of Elmo

There are certain things about kids that you will never understand. The power of Elmo is one of them. Of course we all heard about the "Tickle me Elmo" craze a few years back, but I was not that frame of mind to pay real attention. When Ella was 6 months old, my brother gave her a "Tickle me Elmo" doll. She was a little scared at first and didn't really get excited until closer to her 1st birthday. She now wimpers ever so softly at Elmo when he isn't turned on to go through his laughing antics. She craves the excitement of trying to decide whether to sit or stand to watch her favorite show.

dream home

How simple would it be to just order a kit for your perfect home. Inside my CASA Voque (yes I am back to that) Is an article about building your perfect dream home. I am sure it is a lovely article on how there are alot more resources out now, of how you can do just that.
Here were some websites that were listed: www.loftcube.net, www.smarthousemabo.com, www.casa.rubner.com and my personal fave: www.shelter-kit.com.

who wants to go in on some land and put loft cubes on it?
we can then make short films reminiscent of CQ :)
